Being Our Best

Safety

When something serious appears, the conversation pauses.

Marlow is an AI companion, not crisis support. She can make resources visible, but she cannot monitor anyone, contact emergency services, or keep a person safe.

Fear, coercion, or physical harm

If either partner mentions fear, coercion, controlling behavior, or physical harm in a private Note to Marlow, Marlow stops the couples exchange for that person and privately shows the National Domestic Violence Hotline and 988. Nothing from the note is placed in the shared conversation or revealed to the other partner.

The note itself remains author-scoped. The safety system records only a level and timestamp, without identity, message text, couple, or conversation reference.

Safety levels

Level 0

Ordinary conversation

Nothing about the message suggests risk. Marlow answers as she always does, and nothing is recorded beyond the conversation itself.

Level 1

Relationship distress

Disconnection, resentment, stonewalling, contempt, loneliness inside the relationship, feeling unseen. Marlow slows down and stays with the feeling underneath. Nothing is interrupted.

Level 2

Elevated concern

Passive thoughts of not wanting to be here, self-harm language, drinking or using to cope — and, because this is couples work, fear of a partner, controlling or coercive behaviour, financial or digital control, or threats. Marlow stops pressing, checks in gently, and makes crisis and domestic violence resources visible without making an accusation about anyone.

Level 3

Acute risk

Intent, a plan, access to means, a timeline, an attempt in progress, or a threat to harm the other partner. Marlow stops the conversation entirely and shows a fixed crisis panel — written in advance, not generated in the moment — with 988, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, and 911.
